The Travel Corporation: Vision Investors In South Africa
54
The growth of the travel and tourism industry around the world is a powerful expression of not only the desire of the people of the world to discover new people, new places and new ways of thinking. It is also a reflection of the desire of nations across the globe to open their doors to new visitors. Tourism has become an important means of nations developing their economies, societies and identities.
As a result nations are investing heavily in creating tourism infrastructure to ensure that visitors can arrive and experience the destination for all it has to offer, reaching all corners, all year round. The development of tourism infrastructure can, however, put significant demands in a nation as the amount of time, manpower, intelligence and financial resource required can be beyond readily available means. For governments, the need for development of tourism infrastructure can be a challenge to justify and mobilize when there are more fundamental basic infrastructure needs demanding their attention.
For this reason Public-Private Partnerships, PPPs, have become important instruments in tourism sector development. This is of great importance in developing nations. PPPs, partnerships which unite government and business around specific projects, have proven to be a means of unlocking tourism industry development across the globe. Resources are combined to allow for progress, timeously and measurably, for the benefit of both government and the private sector. The benefits are clear for the tourism sector and they are also overtly apparent for the local people of the destination itself.
The Travel Corporation (TTC) , representing the world’s largest privately owned travel and tourism company composed of over 25 international travel and tourism businesses including tour operators, hotels and other leisure interests continues to demonstrate its understanding of the importance and value of PPPs through its continued investment into tourism sector development in its homeland of South Africa. Having invested in building and advancing the South African tourism sector for over thirty years through skills development, environmental management, conservation and infrastructure, TTC has repeatedly partnered with the nation’s government to construct a tourism sector which will benefit not just the destination, but the people of South Africa in general.
As stated by Gavin Tollman , Chairman of Travcorp SA:
“TTC is committed to the future of tourism in South Africa and to the South African people. Our working closely with government, as genuine partners, reflects the depth and breadth of consideration which TTC undertakes to ensure that the impact made through our investment is holistic, sustainable and equitable for all involved.”
